Good morning!

Romans 8:28 is a scripture that is often quoted by many people in times of trouble. But it’s interesting as to what it’s addressing once you break it down.
Let’s first look at the keywords used in this verse. “To work together” is the present active indicative of sunergeo, which means to be a fellow worker, that is, to co-operate.

For the good. The word “GOOD” is agathos, which means good, benevolent, profitable, or useful good. God will cause everything in our lives to become beneficial, spiritually profitable, useful, and good, even in a fallen world filled with sin and corruption.

“To those who “LOVE” God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” The word for love here is agapao, which means to love in a social or moral sense. Jesus elaborates more on this in John 14: 21, 23. There he defines exactly who makes up “those who love God.”

When it comes to the aspect of “To those who are “CALLED’ according to His purpose.” The word used here is kletos—the ones who are invited, appointed, or selected.

We need to always remember that we did not go to Christ, but He called and invited us.  (1 John 4:19 – We love him because he first loved us.) Ministers often give the invitation to come to Christ at the end of their message/sermon. You can also see the invitation in John 3:16.

Finally, we learn that the calling is always “according to”, the Greek word is kata—HIS PURPOSE. Plainly stated, “His purpose” is for us to no longer be slaves to sin, but dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus! We then can become instruments of righteousness to do His will (Not ours) on this earth.
