Good morning!
Many of us are familiar with those times when we struggled to maintain control of ourselves so that we could control our actions. This verse speaks to this control issue except in a broader manner. It does so by referencing someone who possesses a wise and virtuous character.
Proverbs 25:28 states that when someone fails to govern their spirit, they are similar to a city without walls (In a hostile area). Because it is considered a hostile area, it is only a matter of time before an enemy comes along, breaks down, or scales their (Spiritual/walls) defenses.
In the case of spiritual matters, the attack comes in the form of destructive distractions and temptations.
We are told that those who can rule over their appetites and passions and not let those rule over them can generally maintain control over their thoughts, desires, inclinations, etc. That requires keeping watch over them.
1 Peter 5:8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
Regarding self-control, it doesn’t hurt to be reminded that God is not the author of confusion. That would be Satan as he thrives on “Dis-order” chaos and confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33),
We should know that if we operate as immature Christians, we too will be like a city without walls and lacking a proper defense. A lack of defense leaves us easily accessed by dread, doom, despair, disappointment, disease, discord, disbelief, darkness, destruction, delays, and disturbances.
Eventually, everything within us that is good that has been built up within us drains out, and evil seeps in!
Let us strive to keep our spiritual fortification strong and move forward successfully in all God has called us to do!
