Preferring to See or Preferring to Remember?

Dec 13, 2023

Philippians 3:13-14 (NKJV) 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, (14) I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Good morning!

D J De Haan tells the story of a man slowly losing his memory. After an examination, the doctor said an operation on his brain might reverse his condition and restore his memory. However, the doctor warned the surgery was so delicate that any slight mistake may nick a nerve causing total blindness.

“What would you rather have,” asked the surgeon, “your sight or your memory?”

The man pondered the question for a few moments and then replied, “My sight because I would rather see where I am going than remember where I have been.”

Above in Philippians, we see the Apostle Paul make the same choice spiritually. A choice we all must make and choose wisely. Like us, Paul had success and shame in his past. In Paul’s case, his greatest shame was related to sending men and women of faith off to prison and sometimes their deaths. For most people who find themselves ashamed of their past, it is doubtful that many have a shame worse than Paul’s!

Paul clung closely to God’s forgiveness and mercy. Choosing to forget his past and press onward to a future in Christ. That is also the perspective we need to work toward developing.

Matthew 7:12 -Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Let us strive to learn to choose to see our future as God sees it for us (Jeremiah 29:11). Focusing on a brighter future and not on past failures.

Have a wonderful day walking by His word!
