Good morning!
The Greek word translated as “Comforter” or “Counselor” (John 14:16, 26;) is parakletos which has the meaning “one called to the side of another.” The secondary meaning as it is used in this verse is counseling or supporting him.
The Counselor, or Paraclete, is God the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity. He is a personal being and not an… “It.” He indwells every believer.
During His earthly ministry, Jesus guided and taught the Disciples. A short time later, Jesus announced he would be leaving them.
The power of the indwelling Paraclete gives us the ability to live by the Spirit and “Not by the desires of the sinful flesh” (Galatians 5:16). The Holy Spirit can then produce His fruit within our lives (Galatians 5:22–23) to the glory of God the Father.
God’s plan was for the Holy Spirit to come and dwell within the disciples. Thankfully, His plan also included anyone who placed their trust in Christ. The Comforter effectively took the place of having their/our Master needing a literal presence. Jesus called the Holy Spirit “another Comforter” or in essence one of the same kind.
Today, thanks to the Comforter, we have an advantage Old Testament Believers did not have. Back then, the Spirit of God would come upon people but later depart. But, since the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:2-4) the Holy Spirit has come to God’s people to dwell with them forever.
Let us strive to counter every fear that life may bring our way by knowing that God is able to provide us (When we are open and willing) with divine assistance via the Holy Spirit/The Comforter.
May the Comforter bring you all the peace you need on this day!
