Good morning!
As a young and immature Christian, I sometimes found myself seeking direction from God the way Gideon did amid his troubles. Although I had already prayed, in a last-ditch effort to confirm what I thought God would have me do, I decided to be like Gideon and ask God for a sign.
Gideon was a leader in Israel whom God directed to gather together the Israelite troops to defeat the Midianite invaders. He was trying his best to be sure he heard from God correctly. To confirm he was doing what God wanted, he requested multiple signs from God using two fleeces.
(Fleece – The wool coat of a sheep (soft woolen fibers along with a thin layer of skin) is called fleece. The fleece of sheep is usually kept in one piece).
Today we Christians have advantages Gideon did not have. We have God’s Word. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Secondly, we have the Holy Spirit. John 16:13 – When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority…
Please know I am not saying God no longer moves in signs and wonders. He can and does. I am only suggesting that Gideon’s fleece method is no longer the recommended way to confirm you have heard from God.
Finally, we have to know the Bible warns Satan can perform counterfeit/lying signs and wonders to lead us astray (2 Thes. 2:9) so maybe we should only use God’s safer, preferred method.
Have a fleece-free day walking closely with God!
