COME OUT OF THAT CAVE!

1 Kings 19:12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

Good morning!

There are many parallels found between Moses and Elijah. This verse alludes to the differences between the two dispensations of the law and the Gospel.

While Elijah’s ministry was accompanied by many miracles here he’s hiding in a state of pity, resentment, and fear in a cave on Mount Horeb—a cave on the very same mountain where God let His glory pass by Moses.

God called Elijah out of the cave so that he could watch God pass by and subsequently lift Elijah’s discouragement. God manifested a powerful wind that broke rocks from the mountain. Then a sound was created and an earthquake shook the mountain. God concluded His demonstration with a tremendous eruption of fire.

After this, Elijah was able to determine that God was speaking to him in the stillness. Elijah covered his face in shame realizing he’d been such a coward in the face of the duties God had given him. Running away from those who opposed and disregarded him despite knowing the power of God was there to empower him.

God was teaching Elijah not to rely on awakening and terrifying the people with amazing signs, like the earthquake and fire, but to endeavor to speak to the people by convincing and persuading them at times with a still small voice.

There is no doubt that the display of miracles can bring fear and awe, but they are meant to make way for the presentation of the gospel.

Because, long after a miracle has become a distant memory, His still small voice will remain constant and fresh. Ready to assist us in any new trial or tribulation.

Blessed are the people that hear this still, small, gentle voice, the joyful sound, Psalm 89:15.

Yes, there will be times when we may feel scared and alone in our Christian walk. Becoming tempted to retreat to our hideout/caves. Please know that if we listen carefully, we can hear His still small voice reminding us of His supporting power!
