Good morning!
Barnes’s Commentary on Psalms 46 says the idea in verse 1 is that the people of God, in time of danger, can find God to be what a place of refuge/safety can and should be. Comforting and reassuring! (See Proverbs 18:10).
The word “strength” implies that God is the source of strength to those who are weak and defenseless; or that we may rely on “His strength” as if it were our own. Or that we may feel as safe in His strength as though we had that type of strength ourselves.
Additionally, the word “help” here means to aid or assist, with the word “trouble” referring to all that can possibly come upon us, causing us a degree of anxiety or sorrow. The word rendered “present” – נמצא nimetsâ’ – means, “is found,” or “has been found;” so we can basically state that God has “proved” Himself to be a help for us when we are in times of trouble.
This verse has been described as letting us know that the shelter God presents to the Believer is not to indulge or pamper us. It is to reassure us, strengthen us, and enable us to stand fast in the evil day (Ephesians 6:13).
Let us strive to learn to seek Him out in times of trouble and rely on His unfailing strength!
Isaiah 41:10 – fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Have a fantastic fear-free day walking in the power and authority of His might!
